Swift App Development Program

Students have the opportunity to learn how to go from concept to code through Gadsden State Community College’s Swift Application Development Program.

In partnership with the Alabama Community College System and Apple, a Swift App Development computer lab was first completed at Gadsden City High School for students enrolled in ACE Institute, Gadsden State’s dual enrollment program. Later, additional labs were completed on the Ayers Campus and the Wallace Drive Campus. The program utilizes Swift, one of the world’s most popular programming languages.

“The curriculum is designed by Apple engineers and educators,” said Dr. Leslie Worthington, dean of Academic Programs and Services. “In the Swift App Development Program, students will learn to code and design fully functional apps, gaining critical job skills in software development and information technology.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of app developers will grow by 30 percent over the next decade in order to meet demand.

“Developers who can code in Apple’s Swift programming language have been the most in demand over the past year,” she said.

The median pay for app developers is $100,080 nationally. The average wage reported for software application developers in Alabama is $92,680 to $101,450.

“Gadsden State is building a solid foundation in programming fundamentals using Swift,” Worthington said. “Students are getting practical experience with the tools, techniques and concepts needed to build an iOS system.”
