Precision Machining Program

The Precision Machining Program offers Gadsden State students the opportunity to earn training that could result in a job placement with salaries ranging between $33,640 and $81,960, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Our students can feel confident that they will complete our program and be able to find a job right away,” said David Smith, instructor at Gadsden State’s East Broad Campus. “We have 41 companies that have hired our students.”

The Precision Machining Program at Gadsden State offers both a certificate and an Associate in Applied Science Degree. Students can also earn a Basic Computer Numerical Controls (CNC) short-term certificate.

Emphasis is placed on safety, math, measuring tools and instruments, hand and bench tools, blueprint reading, lathe operations, milling operations, layout, grinding machine operations and CNC. The material set forth follows the National Standards as formulated by the National Tooling and Machining Association. The National Institute for Metalworking Skills establishes the performance standards.

“The ideal Precision Machining student is someone who likes to work with their hands and someone who likes to develop new ways to do things that are more efficient,” he said.

Salon & Spa Management

Gadsden State Community College has taken its cosmetology program to a new level by offering an Associate in Applied Science in Salon and Spa Management.

“Our program prepares students with the skills, tools and knowledge needed to pass the Alabama State Board Licensure Examination,” said Kristina Clifton, instructor at the East Broad Campus. “A Salon and Spa Management graduate can enter a professional career helping others look great and feel better about themselves.”

Five additional academic classes have been added to the cosmetology certificate so a Salon and Spa Management degree can be earned.

“The core curriculum of cosmetology didn’t change,” said Tracy Bonner, instructor at the Ayers Campus. “Academic and business classes were added to make it an associate degree. It’s nice to give our students the opportunity to further their education and their career.”

Short-term certificates are offered in Cosmetology, Nail Technology and Esthetics.

“Students receive practical, hands-on training by practicing techniques in real-world salon situations for haircare, facials, cosmetics application and facial machines as well as manicuring, pedicuring and nail enhancements,” Clifton said.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, cosmetologists report an average annual income of $26,460. Those in the Top 10 percent reported earnings of over $41,000 or more annually. Potential jobs include hairstylist, salon owner, nail technician, salon or spa manager, industry education director, wedding and event stylist, make artist and esthetician, to name a few.

“Many of our graduates open their own salons while others work for employers in industries such as Ulta, Regis and Smart Styles,” Clifton said. “Other employment may include sales representatives for our industry companies and writing and working for beauty magazines. The opportunities are endless.”

Gadsden State’s instructors enjoy seeing their students leave their classrooms as professionals.

“We teach them drive, determination and passion to be the professionals we know they can be,” Bonner said. “We try to give them knowledge they can use in the real world. We want to see them leave us with confidence.”
